FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START IN COMICS?

I began my journey in comics in the early 2000’s where I worked as a colorist for many small press companies such as Arcana, TidalWave, Viper, Platinum and so on. Around 2010 I stopped working on comics and focused on starting a marketing company. This took up a ton of my time and I found that I didn’t enjoy the work. Even more than that, I came to loathe the work! I sold the company in 2022 and created issue one of KUNG FU LEGUME. Keenspot Comics picked it up and the rest is history!

HOW CAN I BREAK INTO COMICS?

There isn’t a magic bullet and it’s really more about what you consider “breaking into comics”. If you want to work for one of the big 2 (Marvel/DC) then you need to draw like a pro and be very honest about your work. They look for a very high-level of professional artistic ability that fits in with the Marvel/DC brand. If you just want to have your own book, then make your book! You can submit it to Image and various small press companies to see if it gets picked up. You can create a Kickstarter and publish it yourself. There are dozens of ways for you to get your book out there. Join groups online that share ideas and critique each other’s work, go to conventions, and hit up publishers there…There are seriously several ways to “break into” the comic industry but ultimately it comes down to just doing the work.

CAN YOU HELP ME BY SHOWING MY WORK TO YOUR PUBLISHER?

That’s not my function. I’m just a comic book creator that’s doing his thang. You can submit directly to publishers yourself so you don’t need me. You can usually find their submission instructions on their websites. Good luck!

DO YOU DO COMMISSIONS AT CONVENTIONS OR CAN I ORDER COMMISIONS?

I do take commissions at conventions depending on how busy I am. I will be setting up a spot in the store that will allow people to purchase commissioned sketches so keep a look out for that!

CAN I MAIL YOU BOOKS TO SIGN?

Unfortunately, no. I don’t want to be responsible for your books getting lost or damaged in the mail. Catch me at conventions and I’ll sign them for you though.

WHAT TOOLS DO YOU USE TO MAKE COMICS?

I create my comics using Clip Studio on a Huion 4k monitor. Depending on the specific project, I either add colors in Clip Studio or Photoshop. To sketch, I employ either a Kuratake Brush Pen or a Pentel Pocket Brush Pen. For the Kuratake, I use a converter cartridge filled with Speedball ink.
